I don't think you need to feel like you're driving a demon car, I think you're just getting worried over nothing. It's quite possible that something is burning under your hood, which I'm sure you've looked under when you smelled the candles. Did you see anything? You could have a bad valve...

Of course you'll get by... we all do. I drive a 525i 5spd in the winter, my GF and my Mom both drive 325i's in the winter, and none of them have been a problem. I don't know that a NJ winter would be any different from a winter here in Toronto. A good set of Blizzaks will do the trick.

Don't know how much a valve adjustment would be, but I would definately change the timing belt, tensioner, and water pump.

I would have said to drop the bushing into some boiling water to soften it up a little, then soap it up... How long did it take you to do that project?

I hear you justin. Unless the thing has no rings or valve seals left, get a valve job, some new plugs, wires and distrubutor cap and be done with it. Chances are getting a rebuild will cost (possible) more than the value of the car. The "eta" engine has lots of grunt, but no get-up-and-go...

My gripe is that it's UGLY.... and I too am 6'4" and fit in a E30 just fine. I look like a dork getting out of a lowered E30, but I'm good inside it. I'll probably end up liking it when I see a E90 up close, but until then, it looks like it's the size of a 5er.
