you can always remove the bulb from the cluster, or fix what it is flashing for (headlight, brakelight, coolant, whatever)... reseting the service indicator is super easy. Do you have the large round plug under the hood, or the small round with a flat edge plug?

An '01 boot wouldn't be ready to crack yet though, unless it was really stressed when taking the filter box off. Maybe the serpentine belt tensioner? (I know nothing of BMW V8's, but we're all guessing here) I wouldn't think it would be your starter gear staying engaged on the flywheel too...

Yup, unfortunately that is your best bet... (as much as I hate going to the dealer for parts), they will give you the correct code, and you'll only have to do it once.... because you'll write it down on every piece of paper that belongs to the car. If you think there's a website that has these...

I would hope you would you never consider switching to a boxster... there's nothing spectacular about them. I would even say they are boring... and I love Porsches!! I would take a Dinan Z3 over a silly Boxster any day. Plus, try working on a boxster's engine... Anyways, good on Porsche...

Honestly I don't know. I'v got an E30 with metals in my driveway (some evenings)... I can take a closer look but I won't be able to compare them until tomorrow or friday.

Giving BMW that serial # should do the trick, but CD/MP3 players are pretty cheap these days. First I would look through every page of every book (not just the radio book) in the glove box... someone must have written it down somewhere.

It's not hard, there are only 4 bolts holding it on... and rust. You've gotta take the whole bumper off, and the black plastic crap... but do you even have the plastic bumpers to begin with?

Predicessor to the first M5?... well it's built on the same chassis as the first M5, but it's not really the predicessor. The M badge they stuck on there is probably just that, stuck on there. I don't think it means a thing. Problems... well, it's an old car, so everything that's made of...
