The only time I ever found an amp in an e30, is was buried under the drivers side dashboard. It's easy enough to bypass... just run new wires.... it's not like any speakers are in the doors. The rear speakers might be a bit of a PITA.

I just pry them out carefully all the time to reuse them for other lights. Once you pry them out, there are little metal tabs that you'd have to solder onto the two wires, in order to put them back into the socket properly. Probably much less of a PITA to just buy them alreadyu in the socket...

I really like my M42... I'll post some sound clips once she's out of storage...it sounds pretty good. Not nearly as beefy as a M20 with a nice free flowing exhaust, but pretty cool sounding indeed. Good milage too... Gas is supposed to go up to $1.50 a litre this summer:(

In the US the M42 was in 3 E30's. From 1989, it was in the 318i(4door), the 318is (2door), and in Canada in the 318i cabrio until 1992. The M40 was a Euro engine with only 1 camshaft -M10 styles-. I'm sure the M44 would drop right in physically, but yeah the ECU and probably some other vacuum...

1991 M42 1.8L, 1996 M44 1.9L. Different engine, but very similar. Of course you can put the M44 into the E30, but if won't be a direct swap, if that's what you're asking.
