My 1992 325is doesn't have this piece, but I'm trying to replace it for my neighbor's 1998 328is. Under the hood on the passenger side between the strut tower and the firewall is a black plastic turbocharger type part. It has a hose coming out that goes up by the headlight and doesn't connect to anything. On the input side it has a vacuum line and an air hose coming from the head. I'm going off memory and it was last week, but I can probably come up with better details if I need to. DOes anybody know what this is? I'm guessing it's something for emissions, and in Illinois they don't check emissions, so I can just unhook it to stop the impeller from squealing. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

That is the secondary air injection pump. It pumps air into the exhaust manifold for approx. 2 minutes after start. It is an emissions system. If you unhook it, you will probably get a CEL. The fan motor is whining because it is exposed to exhaust moisture that is backing up through the air check valve which more than likely has failed. If you hear exhaust rumble through the end of that long hose, the check valve has failed.
The fan motor will eventually fail due to the moisture.
Replacing the motor and the check valve is a DIY project and will cost about $350 for parts.
