I am a newbee so bear with my question.
Any advice would greatly be appreciated.

My mechanic and now former mechanic is about to be long gone.
He is incompetent, he cannot put on the fan clutch that i provided him. (OEM Sachs)
He said it doesn's fit. (so now i know I'm done with him)
So now i need a head gasket i think or a valve gasket if there is such an animal.
I found a BMW guy who is $60 per hour and I would like to know if this is a fair price?

How long (hours) should a Head Gasket Take to replace?
and how much is the gasket?

How long (hours) should the Valve gasket take to replace?
and how much is the gasket?

Thanks once again for any advice.

Time - a head gasket is a whole days work as you have to take the head off and then put it all back toegther again. But when its put back, its essential that the timing is sorted out as some places don't do/realise this!

Gaskets are only a few pounds/dollars about £25/$35 but its best to just get a complete head gasket kit which costs about £80/$120 for a BMW 328i.

Valve cover gasket is an easy 30-60min job. The gasket shouldn't cost more the 45$. I did mine myself when i fisrt got my car and have not had any problems.

Please note that Valve Cover Gasket and Head Gasket are completely two different things, replacing a ValveCover Gasket is trivial and it should take a couple of hours while replacing a head gasket will probably take the whole day and it costs much much more - besides, I would not trust a lot of mechanics with this job.

Good Luck,

You guys take a long time to replace gaskets, jesus! I'm no professional but it took all of 10 minutes to replace the valve cover gasket on my e30, and took my friend (also no professional) about 45 minutes for his valve cover gasket. The head gasket, for a good mechanic, is 6 hours at most.
