I don't know much about cars, but I need to get a very fuel-efficient car, as I am a commuter. Someone recommended getting a used Mini. I'm confused about the various years and models (the Cooper, the Classic, etc.). I believe there was a model year (in the 60s maybe?) when the gas mileage of Minis approached that of today's hybrids.

Can anyone educate me or recommend a good Web site where I can learn all about the older Minis?

Also, are they only available in standard transmission? And is it at all possible to find a good, used Mini for about $4,000 to $6,000?

I'd appreciate any guidance in the right direction.

The old MINI's are quite hard to find, but they are available in your price range. I am not sure about specifics on gas mileage, but it is quite good. Keep in mind that the MINI may require a lot of maintenance as the old models are, well, old! Another drawback is that the MINI is an uncomfortable car to drive...the dude who designed it felt that an uncomfortable driver is an attentive drive.
