Quick coolant question

Ok first of all, i would just like to say..i never expected the amount of mess i would create draining the coolant from the block...good lord [80?] Anyhow, i have no idea what type of coolant the previous owner used. I think it looked green if i remember right. Anyhow i purchased some BMW coolant from the dealer because it is suppose to be the best for our engines. But from what i understand BMW coolant is blue isnt it? Can i switch to blue coolant? I know u cant interchange between the red and green because it creates a sludge. But will i be ok making this switch? It could have been cheap prestone in there for all i know. Thanx for the help guys.

Well, first, what year, model, and engine do you have???? It could be the usual green stuff, but it could be the dexcool (orange).

I have never seen blue coolant. Doesn't mean it is non-existant.

Ok i just thought i read BMW coolant was blue, but what can i say the internet is full of idiots. Ive got a 95 325is so its an M50 engine? The coolant out of the block defenetly wasnt orange, it was the nicest lookin green color ;) But i have no idea if it was BMW coolant. Like i said u cant go from orange to green right? So the BMW stuff i bought could be dexcool? Would it say on the bottle?

The BMW stuff is blue. It has an additive that helps protect the aluminum components (water pump, head, ect.)
I had the same problem on my 2 BMWs. Just make sure you flush out all of the green stuff first. I drained mine, ran straight water (on the first fill up (after draining green) I also added some coolant flushing chemical to help get any other stuff out), drained, and repeated a few times until only clear water was coming out.

Do not, I repeat do not use water straight from the tap. Use denatured water with your new coolant, usually in a 50/50 mix for proper protection. Water from the tap has to many harmful deposits that can and will eat away your radiator. If you flush first make sure you follow the manufacturers recommendations for proper flushing. Usually means you have to run the eng for a short period of time to remove all the possible crud inside. Then you can frush with tap water and drain completely before filling with new anti freeze and denatured water. It's easy to do. Most important, dont forget to check everything for leaks after your done and then about 100 - 200 miles later check your coolant levels again and top off with denatured water if needed. Take it easy dude. [drinking]

95er 325iS could be a M50TÜB25 with Vanos... [;)]

Use distilled water in a 50:50 mixture with Glysantin like from BASF. Its aluminum compatible and by the way its blue too.

Without using distilled water, you fill a small mixture of lime and magnesium in your cooler and they settle down after some time. The result could be pitting corrosion. You can regard the effect everywhere you heat up tap water like in coffee- and washing machines.

Actually 70/30 is a better mix. Better antioxidants (anti-rust), higher boiling point, etc.
 


Top
