I'm getting 15.5 to 16mpg. That's city only and about 10 minute drives. With such a cold winter, the engine does not fully warm up and when I take longer drives and the engine warms up I drive pretty aggresively. When I went on a long trip, my mpg went above 23 and that was spirited highway driving. The only thing that can really help you is if youre oxygen sensor is bad (BMW reccomends changing it every 100k miles) and you change it.

For some reason my car gets 10-11mpg city driving, with a little highway..... but its only short distances say under 5 miles one way and about 5 back, even though BMW claims 19 in the city. I spoke to the SA at about 3k miles and he told me to wait till it gets over 5-6k miles to judge fuel economy and that "It's no lemon" (interesting that he said that) However the cars over 5k, and back then I complained about 13.5..... now its 10.5 ironic how it seemingly is getting worse. Any thoughts??????[:(]

Also the SA said "If I got between 150-200 mpg in the city in that car I'd be happy" Maybe, it is the weather but I find it interesting that a 2.5ltr engine eats almost as much gas as an old Lincoln Town Car or SUV, both 5.0 ltr V8's........

Thanks to this thread to remind me to add a half cup of transmission fluid to the gas tank for the purpose of cleaning the valves and injectors. Before you scoff, have you ever looked into a tranny and seen crud? Anyway, i usually do the tranny fluid every two months in my jeeps and it really does help. Am getting 27-28 mpg @ 75/80mph with my 328i. But that is mostly highway miles to and from the golf course.

Cheers,

OK I'm scoffing, but I'll be nice about it. Where did you learn about this? Why not just use a product designed to clean the fuel system?

Maybe try replacing spark plugs. This can lead to more efficient firing and better gas mileage. I have a e46 and get 22.4 mpg and about 390-400 miles from a full tank of 93 octane. Most of my driving is driving fairly conservative on a few miles of freeway. Is the e36 gas tank smaller than the e46 tank?
