I drive a '95 AT 325i (102K miles) and I recently escaped an accident at an intersection which I think is a brake failure ...I was racing the car and I braked at an intersection that was turning red. The car wouldn't come to a complete stop at the intersection and started moving forward..I could see cars to the left of me coming towards me..I really got lucky since the other cars braked on time and I escaped a side collision..that was reallllllllllllly scarry..I also heard some kind of noise from my car but really couldn't figure at that moment where that sound came from .. I drove the car home conservatively after that and my brakes seemed fine...I have been driving for a day now and I don't see any problem. I am taking it to a mechanic tomorrow and here are some Q's I have before that,

(i) Before this incident I have felt weakness in brake when going downslope etc. But the brake seemed to be good otherwise. What could be the inherent problem?

(ii) A few months auto tranny in my car was replaced with a rebuilt tranny by an independent mechanic. The car has been good since then but some times the car revs a little when I come to a stop suddenly esp. at traffic lights etc. Can this overpower the brake system and cause the car to move forward eventhough the brake pedal is suppressed?

(iii) What could be the potential reason for engine revs when I come to a sudden stop?

Thanks in advance for helping me out.

(1) check your brake fluid, it would be a good idea to replace the fluid ONLY after the winter has passed. check your brake pads thickness, also take the wheels off and check the catapilers, ie (grab a buddy and have them press on the brakes, its a simple alternative to make sure the brake pads are being used right.)

(2) every bmw will idle a little bit higher "sometimes" when coming to a stop, its called "knock control", it helps the engine balance itself properly, this feature is only avaliable in BMW'S, i heard that every car should have knock control but its a expensive component so a lot of car manufactures besides bmw, audi, VW, and Merc Benz dont install this feature for thier engines. GO BMW!!! its just a bmw standerd i guess... maybe the new transmission might be acting up, maybe against the engine, i dont know exactly..

(3) again its "KNOCK CONTROL" maybe you should get it check out by a mechanic, maybe your independent mech, might not have configured the "knock control" settings with your rebuilt tranny... [???1]

I think my problem is quite close to this, mine's a 1992 E36. I could feel a noticeble difference when braking in gear, and braking in neutral and the engine revs up and down and doesnt come to a smooth idle, specially at traffic lights. When initially started too the car takes a while to come to a smooth idle. As you mentioned when i am pressing the brake, the engine revs up and the car attempts to move, quite often.
