I drive a 98 328i with 83000 miles. I just started to use Mobile One fully synthetic oil. Wanted to know what kind of intervals I should use to get my oil changed. I have heard much soonier that the light indicators and conversly I just recently read this article:
http://neptune.spacebears.com/cars/stories/mobil1.html

It states this quote: "Engine wear actually decreases as oil ages. This has also been substantiated in testing conducted by Ford Motor Co. and ConocoPhillips, and reported in SAE Technical Paper 2003-01-3119. What this means is that compulsive oil changers are actually causing more engine wear than the people who let their engine's oil get some age on it."

What is true? [scratch]

My concern is that they are not testing for other contaminants, such as dust and dirt particles, gasoline, carbon and other oil contaminators. A big factor in oil contamination is how the car is driven, short trips not allowing the car to warm up, long drives, taken from a warm garage to cold weather, etc. Synthetic oil does not break down it gets dirty and your driving habits are a big factor here. I have had my oil analyzed and my results were very different. I too use Mobil 1 and I change it every 3-8000 miles depending on how I have been driving and how much time has passed. Does the engine wear decrease or is it just that once the metal contaminants they test for have reached their peak as far as the tests or the way the test was conducted? Also they never mention how the car was "warmed up", and this is a big factor. Interesting reading, however I will continue to change mine as I have been.

Very good point made by Big Daddy!

I change my oil once in between the service schedule (mainly once the service lights get half way). I have always done this with every car I have owned over the last 8 years and have not experienced any disadvantage of changing the engine oil once in between main services. In my opinion using a high quality oil makes a vast difference.

I have been using Castrol 5w30 in my 97' 328i and it seems like a good oil but I recently found out that it was not a proper synthetic! The engine warms up quicker, operates more freely and has helped increase fuel economy slightly never the less! (Compared to Castrol Magnatec 10w40). At the next interval I will be using Castrols 0w40 Racing fully synthetic or Mobil 1 0w40.

Also, its worth noting, oil lubricants are always enhanced and the very lastest Castrol Edge oils (the stuff in the bronze tubs) is 'engineered' to last longer as a lot of modern vehicles (in the UK anyway) have service intervals of around 25-30,000 miles being common place and seems ot be available in all the usual viscosity grades.
