Hey everyone.

When I get out of my car, close the rear tailgate or even slam the door hard there is this high pitch screech that comes from under the car. I have been hearing it for about 1 month now, and keep blaiming on it the suspension.

Yesterday I heard it in the X5, and thought both cars cannot have the same squeaky suspension......after some troubleshooting I found out that the screech/squeak only happens when I exit the vehicle or close the taligate and the Park Brake is set.

When the park/hand brake is not set, there is no squeak at all. Set the hand brake (especially when set hard), and the screech/high pitched squeak can be heard.

Can the hand brake be re-set yourself? Anyone else have this? Everything on the car is working and performing flawlessly, and I won't take the car to the dealer for on intermittent squeak, that only happens when exiting the car & lasts about 1/2 second.

Any advice, help??? Thanks.

Nearly every BMW i've been around squeaks when getting in/out of the car with the e-brake on. Probably could drive like 35 mph and pull up on the ebrake handle FIRMLY but not quickly for like 4 seconds to make sure all the rust or buildup is gone from the brake, and then someday tighten up the brake a little. Dealer should prob be able to do this for you unless you feel willing and have a set of metric tools.

Actually, this is covered in the owners manual (it's in the manual for my 330cic).

Page 68:
"To avoid corrosion and one-sided braking, apply the parking brake lightly from time to time when coasting to a standstill – at a traffic signal, for example – provided that it is safe to do so."

The squeak occurs because the E Brake is not holding tight enough. As the weight on the suspension shifts when you get out, it causes a slight bit of motion.

Wow...you guys are totally amazing. That squeak has been driving me crazy, and even more so because everything else in the car is so damned perfect. Now I can fix this little annoyance.

Extra Thanks to you three. I really apprecaite it. I'll say it again.....Best BMW board period!!!!!
