hi there,

i'v just got a 316i e36 on a j reg which ran well but i thought i would give it some love and care! so i changed the airfilter, oilfilter, fuelfilter, fanbelt, powersteering belt, oil change with engine flush and drivers side wing. now the car struggles to start ( 1 out of 8-10 aptemps) if it will start then it want idle very well if at all then some times you can rev it up between 2 and 3000 revs the up ya foot down and it'll start going up but only to about 4000 revs then it just cuts out!

could anybody please please help me?

thanks [???1]

The symptom you describe sounds like a bad connection to the mass air flow meter, or the mass air flow meter has failed. Since you had things apart, it may be a bad connection.

Check the connection to the air mass flow meter. It is just after the air filter box. It has a cable and connector. Make sure it is connected and tight.

Check the fuel filter. If your line is air locked little fuel will go through and you would not be able to rev and the engine would stall. This can also happen with an old or plugged filter, even one that is too small. If the engine requires more gas than can go through these symptoms will show up.

A similar thing happened to my bike once. It was not as bad, it would just run out of gas and then after a few minutes would be able to start again.

What kind of filter did you get and how did you install it. I am not sure I can correct the problem for you, but it sounds like what happened to me.
